While comedy videos and memes are definitely a big part of TikTok, music is really what's at the heart of the app. If you want in on the action, you're in luck, because there are countless TikTok dance tutorials that will teach you how to pull off all the coolest moves. TikTok's "dance challenges," which feature everyone from high schoolers to grandparents doing the same choreography to the same catchy song, are pretty much inescapable. What really helped make the short-form video app so iconic was all the dancing. In the wake of Vine (RIP), Snapchat, and other must-use platforms of the past few years, TikTok arose as the undisputed champ of 2019, and it’s still the buzziest app around years later. I think I’d need to spend more time on analysis to have any more firmly held opinion than that.Every year brings a new hit app that captures everyone's attention. It’s also another really good piece of evidence in the bucket of “ emoji are gestures”: these are clearly not a linguistic system and are used in a variety of ways by different users that don’t seem entirely systematic.īuuuut there’s also the way that the emojis are groups into phrases for a specific set of related motions, which smells like some sort of shallow parsing even if it’s not a full consistency structure, and I’d say that’s definitely linguistic-ish. To sum up: I think this is a cool idea, it’s an interesting new type of dance notation that is clearly useful to a specific artistic community.
